The surgical techniques employed during a total laryngectomy can have a significant impact on the patient’s ability to produce tracheoesophageal voice and use HMEs and handsfree speaking valves. Timing of the tracheoesophageal puncture and prosthesis fitting, cricopharyngeal myotomy and configuration of the tracheostoma impact the timing and ability to communicate and speak handsfree, ultimately affecting quality of life. This webinar provides an overview of surgical techniques for tracheoesophageal puncture and stoma creation, and of voice and speech therapy approaches to achieve successful handsfree speech. It describes and discusses specific surgical techniques and comprehensive therapeutic approaches including voice therapy.
