Surgical techniques employed during a total laryngectomy can have a significant impact on the patient’s ability to produce tracheoesophageal voice, use HMEs and handsfree speaking valves as well as swallowing function. This webinar provides an overview of surgical techniques for tracheoesophageal puncture and stoma creation, and voice and swallowing therapy approaches to achieve successful handsfree speech and maximize swallowing function. Incidence, causes, prevention and (surgical) treatment options of post-laryngectomy dysphagia and evidence and experience of a postoperative early oral feeding protocol will also be presented. Finally, how to identify and monitor dysphagia in this patient population will be discussed including the diagnostic tools, compensatory techniques, dietary changes and therapeutic techniques to improve outcomes will be given.
